It is great to see the Ruby landscape finally maturing. Despite if none of these VMs become successful, Ruby has changed and influenced the software industry a great deal. It has made many other languages and platforms rethink how software is designed, produced and maintained. While none of its features or techniques are unique, the Ruby mindset has pushed certain patterns and practices into the forefront of most developers minds.

[...] State of Ruby VMs: Ruby Renaissance – igvita.com By namedb Ruby is commonly associated with the frameworks (Rails, RSpec, and many others) that it enabled, but it is much more then that. The same ideology and design principles that popularized the language at the start are also the reason why it is being currently ported to a variety of alternative platforms: JVM, Objective-C, Smalltalk VM and Microsoft’s DLR. Technical details aside, few will disagree that Matz’s focus on “how we feel while programming” and the objective of “making the programmer happy” has resonated with the larger community. via igvita.com [...]

@Ashram: I don't think it's all doom and gloom. Ruby is already being fragmented across platforms, but that's not a bad thing at all. What it does mean though, is that projects like RubySpec become even more important to maintain and adhere to for each VM.

@Jonathan: Good point. JRuby guys mentioned that in their "state of union" presentation today at JRubyConf and it's definitely something to look forward to -- Sun engineers believe they can make invokedynamic as fast as the non-dynamic version!

@Jon, @Trevor: Thanks, fixed.
