[...] Ilya Grigorik recently pointed me to a great example which shows vividly how even relatively modest changes in the technology of collaboration can change the nature of collaboration. The example is from an open source project called Ruby on Rails. Ruby on Rails is a web development framework famous within the web development community - it’s been used to develop well-known sites such as twitter - but, unlike, say, Linux, it’s largely unknown outside its own community. The original developer of Ruby on Rails is a programmer named David Heinemeier Hansson who for a long time worked on the framework on his own, before other people gradually began to join him.
what's really amazing is seeing what a positive impact github has had on rails development. watching the rails swarm, everything was chugging along, slowly but nicely, and then when github launch (april 10, 2008) is when all hell breaks loose.

Ilya Grigorik from igvita.com has created a visualization of the usage of GitHub. He used code_swarm to show the organic growth of a software developement process.

JGeiger, yep, I'm a big fan of glTail. UbiGraph is another interesting one to look at.

Eric, that looks awesome. Out of curiosity did you use the GitHub fork to render yours? I see some visual differences in how our videos rendered.

Kamal, that's an interesting idea. It would be much simpler if Noria's list included the handles as well, not just the full names. Another commenter on YC News also suggested adding tag overlays for big releases, which is a great idea.
