Jim, exactly my thinking when I first heard about Thrift: "Right, all we needed was another middleware/RPC protocol/stack..." Having said that, I've come around full circle on it once I actually played around with it. Definitely one of the cleanest and fun to play with frameworks out there!

Wow - its hard not to like the approach but as someone who's had a small part in advancing broadly interoperable web services over the last 6 years this is a bit of a throwback - though a pretty elegant one. :)

I remember the bygone days when all this stuff was going to be commoditized in the patform and we could all move on...

Cornelius, you're right, most applications don't need the middleware layer provided by thrift. Having said that, anytime you get into SOA architectures, or when you have to start really scaling the site, you'll be up against this exact problem that Thrift tries to solve! :)

Hey Ilya,
Thanks for this post, haven't heard of Thrift before. It seems definitely like a clean and simple solutions and avoids using other more "burdensome" middleware implementations like Corba, Java RMI or .Net Remoting to create distributed web applications. Luckily most web applications don't need to be distributed.
