Many thanks for your paper.
"Offline backups" is what I really need, but there might be a problem with "different versions of MySQL".
The question is: "Which versions of MySQL are so different that they expect some files to be in a different format?"
QUOTE:
"We don't recommend this tactic [Copying Database Files (cp)] for moving a database from one machine to another server, since different versions of MySQL may expect these files to be in a different format." (O'Reilly, "Learning PHP and MySQL" 2nd Ed. 2007, Page 156)

Do you have an idea how to deal with this problem?

Thanks once more,
Igor

Sherlon, glad you liked it. Feel free to send an email with your commet...

GP, thanks for the feedback. The version you tried is XP only. I think you are right on in your comment on windows only being a no-no. Other ports are on their way. We are doing a limited beta of our Linux version of the software. It is designed to be for backing up mysql or any set of directories on your Linux servers or desktops, with the same great encryption and de-duplication capabilities.

The windows XP version is currently a "backup server" - which backs up one or more mysql systems (can be on windows or Unix or Linux) and acts as an aggregator that then sends the backups to Amazon S3.

The Linux version is (as expected) a lot more powerful, in that it can be invoked as a command line utility that you can put in cron or your own scripts.

Let me know if you are interested in being part of the Linux beta, just shoot me an email.

GP, interesting on paper, but I couldn't get the software to run. It seems to be windows only, which is a big no-no for most MySQL users, and it crashed on my Vista machine as well.

Another one that is FREE and gives offsite, automated backup to Amazon's datacenters (Amazon S3 web service). It also has compression, de-duplication and differential backup built in. Best of all, its trivial to use - in a few minutes you will be backing up your databases.

Enjoy!

Earlier in the comments someone mentioned Navicat as being useful. The MySQL graphical utilities for OS X have really really improved as of late and you would be well served to give them a try.

From the latest build you can remotely setup, schedule and control backups from within the app (essentially graphical config for mysqldump).

Thanks,
