THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO SEE. For 4 months I was thinking about this idea. I thought that this application could be an scrapbook to grasp world wide events. By that time, I saw core-animation presentation from apple. 3D interface isn’t easy on web. However, if your application moves on to gadget, it would be awesome.

You might want to check out this presentation:
“Urban Sensing, Social Networking, and the Third Thing“. There is a couple of great visualization ideas in there for very similar applications.

This is the exact API I was looking for a few weeks ago at Mashup Camp III at MIT. Check out the FutureBoston project:

They sponsored a competition and made some data sets available that are a perfect use case for this.
